Egypt - p.8 - Cairo, then home

Having returned to Cairo, we decided to try a train to El Alamein, where a decisive WWII battle occurred.

While waiting for our train, we had a snack, and a kitten came over to beg.
After he got a piece of meat, he became sleepy, and jumped onto my lap.  I shared him with Gaetan.

He was very appreciative of the attention.

Here comes our train.

From the train, I snapped a photo of a typical overburdened truck, ...

and a farm field adjacent to a canal.
Again, you can see that dumps form where private property ends and public property begins.

OK, here we are at the El Alamein Military Museum.  Unfortunately, because the cab driver's vehicle was not
in good drivable condition, we arrived just minutes after it closed.

We were able to see the vehicles outside the military museum.

Military vehicles.

The sign says "3-ton Ford Supply Truck".

"British Tank"

"Indian-British Tank"

"Italian Artillery"

"Italian Armored Car"

More Italian artillery.

"Sherman Tank"

"Spanish 30-mm Gun"

"Spitfire"

M-3 Grant tank used by the British in their desert campaign.

Next we saw the Commonwealth cemetery. The British casualties were outnumbered by soldiers from New Zealand and Australia.   I saw a few Christian, Jewish and Muslim graves from the French Foreign Legion, too
.

The cab driver left us at this kebab restaurant while he went to find another car.  The food was good.

The restaurant was nice & quiet until they decided their foreign guests needed some TV, and moved it next to us.

The delay from the cab driver's dead car caused us to miss our flight home and to have to spend the night in the Cairo airport.  Then 30 hours later, we got a flight to NYC.  Another night in an airport, this time La Guardia.

Sunrise at La Guardia airport. Two flights later, most of us made it home.

Gaetan's cat Gigi, miffed at him for leaving her for 2 weeks, withholds her greeting and spies on him.

That's all Folks!
